Les photographies de Thomas Gauthier interrogent les possibilités d’une expression poétique dans un monde produisant ses propres ruines. Elles portent en elles la notion du passage et de l’instant présent à la fois familier et transcendental que nous ne verrons ni ne vivrons plus. Tant sur la forme que la couleur, le photographe se concentre sur la perfection miraculeuse d’une situation. Il trouve la beauté fantasque enfouie derrière des vitrines, des engins de constructions, des drapés, des brèches, et des barrières en suggérant la pleine liberté de la nature dans la ville. Muni d’un vieil appareil chargé au hasard d’une pellicule couleur ou noir et blanc, parfois périmée, c’est en marchant dans la rue avec son regard imprégné de grâce que le corpus Journées de Thomas Gauthier s’est constitué. Journées n’est pas tout à fait le premier livre de Thomas Gauthier, menuisier de métier il fabrique depuis longtemps ses livres bruts et sensibles à l’image de sa photographie.

Thomas Gauthier's photographs question the possibilities of poetic expression in a world producing its own ruins. They carry within them the notion of the passage and the present moment, both familiar and transcendent, that we will no longer see or experience. Both in form and color, the photographer focuses on the miraculous perfection of a situation. He finds whimsical beauty buried behind windows, construction machinery, drapes, breaches, and barriers suggesting the full freedom of nature in the city. Equipped with an old camera randomly loaded with color or black and white film, sometimes outdated, it was while walking in the street with his gaze imbued with grace that the corpus Journées de Thomas Gauthier was formed. Days is not quite the first book by Thomas Gauthier, a carpenter by trade, he has long been making his raw and sensitive books in the image of his photography.
